Welcome to TEDxPiscataquaRiver: On the Edge
We’re so excited to share Portsmouth’s fourth annual TEDx event with you!

We have an incredible lineup of speakers, performers, TED Talk videos, special events and experiences to share with you today. This year’s event has grown in many ways since our very first TEDx in 2013 — right here in the same building, back when 319 Vaughan Street was the yet-to-be-realized future home of 3S Artspace.

This year we made it possible for more people than ever to attend by doubling our audience size to 200 (and making tickets available for purchase for the first time, which sold out in 24 hours). We also incorporated two new event elements, both reflecting our theme of On the Edge: a tech playground filled with cutting-edge technologies, and a story and art exhibit exploring people, and a world, On the Edge.

Part of the reason we’re able to grow this year is our upgraded TEDx license eligibility, accomplished by my trip as our event’s lead organizer to TED Global>Geneva for the official TEDx training from TED. Alongside 500 TEDx event organizers from around the world, I was able to hear from TED how they make their official TED Conferences so special. More importantly, I was able to learn from other TEDx organizers how they adapt the global format to fit their local communities. I hope the massive amount of inspiration and expertise gained from TED Global is evidenced in this year’s TEDxPiscataquaRiver.

This event is the result of about 10 months of hard work and planning by a large group of people from all over the Seacoast region. We hope this event feels like Portsmouth. We also hope this event feels nothing like Portsmouth. We hope it exists on the edge between our very unique local identity and the braintrust of ideas from around the globe. We hope it brings you on the edge of a breakthrough, of accepting a new challenge or adopting a new perspective. We hope it pushes you over the edge to greater community involvement, a better understanding of your neighbors or greater empathy for strangers.

Whatever you’re on the edge of, we’re so glad you’re here today. We can’t wait to see where this day takes you.
